Call of Duty – Vanguard angespielt: Old Warfare

We played the beta of Call of Duty: Vanguard and enjoy cool new modes and some comebacks.

As known, Call of Duty: Vanguard the same engine as the two-year-old modern Warfare uses our joy. Even if we had with Call of Duty: Black Ops - Cold was quite our fun, it has never been able to approach the class of the previous part. The Modern Warfare reboot brought some gameplay features with themselves that we missed in the 2020-cod painfully, especially the tactical sprint and the ability to tend to us on objects. In Vanguard, all this is back with the game and one of the reasons why the multiplayer beta pleases us so much.

Joyful reunion

Call of Duty: Vanguard is far from the eponymous modern warfare of Modern Warfare with his second world war scenario, no question. But ultimately, that means first and foremost only that she shoots with older weapons on your opponents and does not use modern AKS, M16s and so on. Unlike when we would compare Vanguard with one of the series parts that play in the future (Advanced Warfare or Infinite Warfare), the playful changes are limited.

And so the new part in the multiplayer is really very much like the modern warfare of 2019. should be called: There are again a few more tactical options than in Black Ops - Cold was. The tactical sprint - so a second, even faster sprint - celebrates just as its comeback as the ability to open doors (and this time even windows) only a gap far to carefully luguce with sufficient coverage. Also, that you can just go to walls, walls and co, we welcome very much. Especially in modes like rule , in which it is partly about defending positions, that is extremely useful.

Da flies a lot through the area

In addition, developer adds Sledgehammer Games to the whole one more level: The environment is partially destructible in Call of Duty: Vanguard. The emphasis is on partially , so do not expect battlefield dimensions. Complete houses are never equalized here to the ground. But there is some wooden surcharges on the cards, which you can easily break completely with bullets or your body. Likewise, the furniture can be disassembled in interior. So on the one hand, you can rob your opponents cover, on the other, of course it looks very good and intensifies the atmosphere of the ego shooter. The destruction likes the typical Call of Duty gameplay do not change fundamentally, but is a meaningful supplement.

And the baller? How does it look like? Well, already the Gameplay demo from the Gamescom Opening Night Live has optimistic about us that also Call of Duty: Vanguard will again offer a very satisfying gunplay. After we tried the beta yourself, we can only confirm: whether STG44, Thompson Machine Gentol or M1 Gardand, to name a pair of typical shooters from the time of World War II, which belong to the arsenal of the action game, you feel all Wives well and simply. The strong hit feedback including blood sprayers and also one or the other splatter effect do the rest.

Louder please!

In the sound, the developers could make something else. Do not go wrong: The killing tools sound neatly. This is especially true for the machine guns, shotgun and carabiners. But we had the feeling that everything is a little too quiet - and no, the volume of our headphones was certainly not too low. In terms of mixing should still be something here. Graphically, however, leaves Call of Duty: Vanguard a very good impression. With Battlefield 2042 it will certainly not be able to keep up, but the arms models and environments are beautifully detailed, all the animations at the highest level and performance is 1a.

Stupid only that the PC beta welcomed us at the first start directly with the shader installation. So put it on, this time again after each update of the game (and your graphics card driver) waiting to wait that this process ends before you can play reasonably. Of course, we know this annoyance since Modern Warfare only too well and it s just as its engine. It is still a pity that the developers do not seem to make it apparently that technology is flawless without this measure.

Diverse locations

The Multiplayer Beta has already given us a pretty extensive insight into Call of Duty: Vanguard. Of the 16 maps for standard modes, which will give it in the release version, we were able to see four pieces that score with a decent bandwidth of settings and lots of variety. Red Star is playing in a bombed, snowy city in Russia with inner areas and a large, very open well square. Hotel Royal in turn is made for MP and shotgun users, it is the top floor and the roof of a luxury hotel with many narrow rooms and courses. Gavutu in turn puts you on an island in the Pacific with shipwreck and on Eagle s Nest you fight in a property in the mountains.

Three of these four cards please us because they are well balanced and offer no typical campers positions. Sure, there are long courses, at the end of which snipers can be comfortable. But it does not fall hard, which fall into his back, especially since they just have one gang in each case. On Red Star that looks different. Here you can hide yourself in such a man s window or house wall hole in an upper floor and oversee from there in the center of the map - that does not push for our loyalty because it grants snipers a significant advantage.

Two welcome new arrivals

In terms of game modes we welcomed us in the beta on the one hand old acquaintances. Team Deathmatch , Tracking confirmed , rule as well as search & destroy may be missing in any Call of Duty. But we could also take a look at two completely new variants. There would be a patrol that could be rewritten as a hardpoint with a hiking control point. Yes, you have read correctly: Here it is important to control a zone that is constantly in motion. As long as more players of their own team are within the marked area, one collects points. The mode is therefore great because Camper is completely out of place here. What brings you to remain constantly in the same place when it comes to keeping a mobile zone?

We like Champion Hill even better. The mode you can play solo or in two and three teams. He takes place on a specially designed card, which is divided into several small arenas. In the middle there is a zone in which you buy equipment on several boxes. Subsequently, it is being drawn, who opposes Wen in the different combat areas. You have a limited number of life and when it is used up, you can not respond anymore, so soon as soon as you bite the grass. The aim is to be the last surviving or the last still living team. Champion Hill is quasi a mix of firefight and Last Man Standing , which is very exciting and just fun in a team - so much that we wish the mode to a standard feature of the Cod Turn becomes.

Assessment

Nobody probably expected Call of Duty: Vanguard would basically venture something new. It is all the more pleasing that there is at least a small innovation with the destructible environment, which we no longer want to miss. In addition, SledHammer Games familiarizes the strengths that Infinity Ward has established two years ago and left Treyarch 2020. In combination with the successful gunplay and the ordinary card design (with the exception of red star ) this results in a call of duty, which we are very happy, even if it has to fight again with Battlefield around our free time. At least we are good things that Vanguard is a technically round game, as the beta is already. With Battlefield 2042 we still have our doubts because of the short-term shift and history of the series.
